Krakow was chosen as the European Capital of Gastronomic Culture 2019. The title was awarded for the first time by the European Gastronomic Academy.
We are honored that the European Gastronomic Academy has chosen Krakow, and on the last straight, in the finale we managed to defeat famous European cities and even capitals of EU countries. Do we deserve this name? Certainly yes! We have good recipes, excellent products from local suppliers, and above all a nice and hospitable atmosphere. Krakow has been promoting good gastronomy for years. The Action Recommendation of the Krakow City Restaurants has already had 11 editions. For years, we invite Cracovians and tourists to the dumplings festival. But we also have new products – Krakow Zapusty, where we maintain Krakow’s tradition of frying pastry and the Obwarzanek feast. With what it will become the culinary capital. We will organize next year several important events that will be an opportunity to host specialists and enthusiasts of good cuisine and celebrities of world gastronomy in Kraków. We also want to create new projects and, in addition to the already mentioned dumplings or donuts, promote recipes related to the cuisine of the royal court, bourgeois or academic Krakow – says Jacek Majchrowski, Mayor of the City of Krakow.
The European Gastronomic Academy decided that Kraków should become the European Capital of Gastronomic Culture. Krakow restaurants are the only ones outside of Warsaw to have Michelin Michelin distinctions – currently there are 26 of them. Almost twice as many Krakow restaurants were honored by Gaullt & Millau, and 8 recommended Slow Food Polska. Krakow has the resources that ensured this success – good recipes, top-quality products from local suppliers, as well as hospitality and a pleasant atmosphere.
Next year, many events will be organized as part of the European Capital of Gastronomic Culture: Gastronomic Congress for specialists and enthusiasts of good cuisine from around the world, meetings of Krakow chefs and celebrities of world gastronomy leading restaurants distinguished among others Michelin guide stars. An interesting, innovative format will be “virtual cooking”. It will consist in simultaneous preparation of dishes in various restaurants, which can be followed on the Internet, and the theme will be the cuisine of Krakow and Poland.
The city will prepare its own calendar of culinary events for 2019 and subsequent years. In addition to the already mentioned events, such as Krakow Zapusty or Dumplings Festival, as well as culinary paths within Opera Rara Festival or Świętojański Fair, new projects related to the cuisine of the royal court, bourgeois and academic Krakow.
Krakow’s culinary heritage is also street food – in the Middle Ages portaple stalls operated on the streets of the parish. On the other hand the “newly discovered” maczanka after Krakow was a delicacy of Krakow fiasries already in the 17th century.
